Background
Gary is a Fellow of the Association of Law Costs Draftsmen (ALCD) and a qualified Costs Lawyer with over 40 years of experience in the legal costs sector. He began his career in 1983 at M B Kain (now Kain Knight), where he was trained by the co-founding partner, Jim Knight.
During his initial tenure, he rose to become a Partner and shareholder, playing a pivotal role in the firm’s development until he departed to join Harmans (later Harman GJK) as a Partner for 11 years. Gary has recently returned to Kain Knight, bringing with him a wealth of expertise drawn from running the Chelmsford office at his previous firm and navigating the industry’s most significant shifts, including the transition to remote working post-Covid.

Gary possesses comprehensive expertise across the full spectrum of costs matters, ranging from Commercial Litigation to Court of Protection work. He has a particular specialism in high-value Clinical Negligence and Personal Injury claims.
Notable Cases
Gary has been involved in several landmark cases that illustrate his capability in handling complex and high-profile litigation.
- Sylvia Henry v News Group Newspapers: Gary prepared the bills in this libel claim, which is recognised as the first matter of significance to be considered as a budgeted case. He instructed Simon P. Browne when leave was granted to depart from the budget.
- Various Hep-C Victims v NHS: He was heavily involved in this major class action litigation, managing the costs aspects for the claimants.
