Background
Alistair joined Kain Knight from an international law firm in 2019, having previously worked for a legal costs specialist firm and spent over a decade prior to this working for a FTSE 250 international insurer within their legal services division.
Current Role & Responsibilities
Alistair covers the complete range of inter partes costs matters, from representing clients on complex or high value detailed assessments, through technical arguments concerning proportionality, the validity of retainers, VAT, costs budgets, to disputes about insurance premiums, medical reports, fixed costs disputes and other similar matters. Alistair primarily represents Defendants in such matters at all levels but also represents Claimants, including drafting bills and costs budgets.
Alistair acts for both defendants and claimants and has been instructed in some high profile costs litigation in recent years. He has represented a wide range of clients from State owned governmental department, international tech companies, law firms abroad, worldwide tour package holiday providers, and Queen’s solicitors, in a wide range of interesting and complex cases including drafting costs statements in the DIFC courts.
Alistair is regularly instructed to represent solicitors seeking to recover costs from their clients and by clients seeking to resist paying such costs, in complex and high value cases. He has extensive experience in all aspects of solicitor-client matters and has a particular expert knowledge of the of the Solicitors Act 1974 in this regard.
Education & Qualifications
Alistair has been working full time in costs since 2006 and was admitted as a Costs Lawyer in 2011.
Interests
Alistair is happily married to Julie for over 15 years and has three children, and they actively as a family try to travel as much as possible. Alistair used to be a keen footballer and still plays if he gets the chance, but has now diverted his attention to golf which is a little less demanding! Other interests are film, socialising and eating out.
